Why shouldn't we be friends? Lahore is nearer to Delhi than Washington or London. We look alike, we have similar cultures, and we speak the same language. We have been united in our struggle for freedom. But somewhere we got misguided misled and we became prey to the machinations of an outsider.

India and Pakistan must ready themselves to take bold initiatives so that their relationship can rest on stable and permanent foundations. Asif Ali Zardari's visit to India on April 8 — including a luncheon meeting with Manmohan Singh — may be an essentially private trip, yet the detour brings hope of a new phase in India-Pakistan relations. The expectation is that President Zardari will renew his invitation to the Indian Prime Minister to visit Pakistan, and that the latter will accept, setting the stage for the bold initiatives that are now needed to take matters forward. Our entrenched positions are non-starters There was a time when any statement on Kashmir, either by the prime minister of India or that of Pakistan used to create rumpus. Politicians and the media on both sides would dwell on for several days on what a particular remark tried to convey. Pakistan Prime Minister Yousaf Reza Gilani said the other day that his country would seek a solution on Kashmir through a dialogue, not hostilities. We, the delegates of the 8^th Joint Convention of the Pakistan India Peoples’ Forum for Peace and Democracy (PIPFPD) held in Allahabad from 29—31 December 2011, note with concern that the relationship between India and Pakistan has deteriorated since the last convention, which took place in New Delhi from 25—28 February 2005. The past seven years have seen the Mumbai terror attacks and a continuing assault on Pakistani sovereignty by NATO forces headed by the United States. Against this backdrop, it has become incumbent on the peoples of the two countries to restore India-Pakistan friendship and revive the cooperative relationship that prevailed twelve years ago.
