India and Pakistan must ready themselves to take bold initiatives so
that their relationship can rest on stable and permanent foundations.
Asif Ali Zardari's visit to India on April 8 — including a luncheon
meeting with Manmohan Singh — may be an essentially private trip, yet
the detour brings hope of a new phase in India-Pakistan relations. The
expectation is that President Zardari will renew his invitation to the
Indian Prime Minister to visit Pakistan, and that the latter will
accept, setting the stage for the bold initiatives that are now needed
to take matters forward.

Our entrenched positions are non-starters
There
was a time when any statement on Kashmir, either by the prime minister
of India or that of Pakistan used to create rumpus. Politicians and the
media on both sides would dwell on for several days on what a particular
remark tried to convey. Pakistan Prime Minister Yousaf Reza Gilani said
the other day that his country would seek a solution on Kashmir through
a dialogue, not hostilities.

We, the delegates of the 8th Joint Convention of the Pakistan India Peoples’ Forum for Peace and Democracy (PIPFPD) held in Allahabad from 29—31
December 2011, note with concern that the relationship between India
and Pakistan has deteriorated since the last convention, which took
place in New Delhi from 25—28 February 2005.
The past seven years have seen the Mumbai terror attacks and a
continuing assault on Pakistani sovereignty by NATO forces headed by the
United States.
Against
this backdrop, it has become incumbent on the peoples of the two
countries to restore India-Pakistan friendship and revive the
cooperative relationship that prevailed twelve years ago.

Their soldiers may be standing along the northern and western borders
looking eye-to-eye with fingers well trenched on the triggers of most
sophisticated rifles and canons. But the Indian scientists ensure the
safety of Pakistan from natural disasters like tsunamis and cyclones!

I recently wrote a blog post titled ‘An Indian who moved to Pakistan‘.
The response I got – positive and negative – is much appreciated. It
inspired me to write this piece about my dream of a world without
borders and wars.
Before I begin, however, I want to make clear that I do not have any
desire to undermine the sovereign and political borders between India
and Pakistan or between any other countries. My dream is to erase the
psychological borders that are etched in our minds in the shape of
prejudices and hatred towards the other.

For the last few years news reports about violence,
extremism, mistreatment of minorities, and poor governance have been become
more frequent. And there is a sense of gloom and doom about the nation’s future
among Pakistani peace activists and civil society members.

Everything was planned and we were supposed to meet finally after six years of Orkut, MSN and Facebook connection. I was sitting in the Berlin metro line looking at the map of the city and the piece of paper where I chalked out the route to his home. He calls and tells me that he is waiting at the metro station. I get down at the said station and look around for him, I cannot find him, I try to call him up, I hear someone calls my name and turn around … I see him… it was like little fraction of Euphoria.
On the escalator leading out of the station he says to me, “so from a facebook picture to a real person.” I don’t know whether I was mesmerized or lost I could just say “yeah”.

Gandhi opposed the creation of Pakistan. Such opposition was based on his conviction that Hindus and Muslims and other communities could live together and make their particular contributions to building a multi-religious, multi-cultural nation with equal rights for all citizens. However, when partition did take place he took positions that have no parallels, historically or contemporaneously.
There is no doubt that Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi brought religion into politics in a big way, but religious revivals were underway among all religious communities of India since the late 19th century. He wanted religion to play a positive role in bringing India’s myriad of religious, sectarian, ethnic and caste-based communities into an inclusive grand composite nation.
